Welcome to our third monthly ezine/newsletter about everything hole-in-one. This ezine/newsletter supplements our great blog that provides daily hole in one news and stories.

I've also thrown in another tip picked up during my very long PGA career. I still see amatuers today, making the same simple mistakes they made years back. While there is much more to see, read and experiment with in golf. Mostly, the fundamentals are now, what they were 20, if not 40 years ago. I'll try to help you hit 'em straight.

That's the only way to get hole in ones!!

A TIP FROM THE KING

Let’s talk a little bit about a question that I get quite often about the golf swing. That is how to stop an over the top move that is so common to many golfers. They are oh so tired of their “patented” slice, and would kill to see the hook side of the fairway just once.

Jim Flick has perhaps the easiest solution to the problem, and a lot of it is visual.

The typical over the top swing is caused by a takeaway that is far too much to the inside, and the natural instinct on the downswing is to start with the shoulders which is what actually causes the club to move away from the body creating the dreaded swing path.

Flick’s advise is to simply imagine Freddy Couples golf swing, which if you will remember starts with that effortless straight back and upward motion.

This takeaway alone will allow you to get the club into a more appropriate position at the top, and will promote a down the line downward motion.

Just watch Freddy next time and you will immediately get the picture. By the way, do yourself a big favor and try to mimic Fred’s tempo also. Believe me, it’s all good.

Until next time,

JULY'S BEST HOLE IN ONE NEWS

- Straight from the Hole In One King -

I couldn’t help but notice that a couple of long time pro golf records bit the dust this month. Mark Calcavecchia broke the record for most birdies in a row, when he saw feathers fly on nine consecutive holes at the Senior British Open. Moved himself well up the leaderboard, but fell back with a couple of bogies coming in. That is a record I think will stand for quite a while.

The one that really got my attention however was a little closer to my heart. At last week’s RBC Canadian Open, eight players made ACES! That’s right……eight players made eight aces. I believe that five was the previous record, so this wasn’t even close. Finding the bottom of the hole shots went to Joe Durant, Peter Lonard, Arjun Atwell, Briny Baird, Leif Olson, Casey Wittenberg, Mike Weir, and Kevin Suntherland. That’s another one that might stay in the books for a while.

More hole in one news stories....

A GREAT HOLE IN ONE STORY (UNEDITED)

We were getting ready to tee off playing our usual skins game on Wednesday night at Heartwell (all par 3’s) in Long Beach, CA. Nothing expensive, .50 skins, double for a bird, .25 closest to the pin, and 2.00 overall winner. We had a newcomer to our group (Cid) and I was explaining to him the how much each hole was worth and I told him; the most you can usually lose on a bad night was about $15.00; oh yea if anyone hits a hole in one, it’s a $10.00 bonus.

I started out the first hole with a bird and joked about well that’s never a good start because it’s all downhill from there. Then came hole 13. I hit a good shot and because of the pin placement you really couldn’t see the hole. My nephew Steve said; man that looks like it’s going in the hole to which I replied, I don’t know about that, but I think I’ll be close. As we started walking toward the hole my buddy Senior Luis said; bro, I see you ball on the back of the green, to which I replied; damn I thought I hit it better that that, it must have rolled. As we got closer Luis said, it not a ball and we were able to see the whole green and no balls were on the green, so I said damn, I must have went really long however I thought I hit a better shot than that.

As we got to the green we looked everywhere and could not find the ball. I kept saying that sucks I could have sworn I hit a good shot. So just because you never know, I looked in the cup and there it was, with my mark staring me right in the face. I jumped back and yelled; Luis, Luis, come here bro it’s in the freaking hole. Luis came over and reached down and pulled my ball out of the hole and said; holly shit! I was in shock! Steve just said no way! And Cid was just speechless. After I got hugs and congratulations from everyone, they made me head back to the clubhouse for some celebratory beers, to which I was more than happy to buy.

I went into the club house and raised up both hands and told the guy behind the desk I had just hit a hole in one. He then pulled out a signup sheet for hole in ones, which I completed, grabbed my six pack and headed back out to hole 14. As I got back to the tee box another round of hugs and comments were made and then the toast.

I said, what makes this so special is you guys were here to see it. I don’t think I will ever forget that night and I guess the only question left now is, could it possibly happen again?
