Welcome to our fourth monthly ezine/newsletter about everything hole-in-one. This ezine/newsletter supplements our great blog that provides daily hole in one news and stories.

I've also thrown in another tip picked up during my very long PGA career. I still see amatuers today, making the same simple mistakes they made years back. While there is much more to see, read and experiment with in golf. Mostly, the fundamentals are now, what they were 20, if not 40 years ago. I'll try to help you hit 'em straight.

That's the only way to get hole in ones!!

A TIP FROM THE KING

This month's tip is actually on an area of the game that I have great issues with.....putting!

In our part of the country, we are going through a transition period, whether it be actual over seeding or aerifying of the greens. With modern turf management, the transition period is minimized, but still impacts the putting surfaces. Most facilities will undergo the process, and under any circumstances, the pace of the greens will be impacted.

The tip this month is to focus on speed or pace of your putts.

Too often, we get caught up on the line of the putt, and don't pay enough attention to the speed of the green. My advise is to focus on how the greens are rolling, and to pay more attention to how hard you hit the putt as opposed to getting purely focused on the line of the putt.

We can pretty well see the "lay of the land" so to speak, so the break of the putt is somewhat obvious. The pace of the putt will dictate the eventual outcome, so pay particular attention to speed and not break.

Two putts per green is not a bad thing!

Until next time,

AUGUST'S BEST HOLE IN ONE NEWS

By LIZ HOCHSTEDLER liz.hochstedler@lee.net Tuesday, August 25, 2009 10:16 AM CDT

With one swing of his 5-iron, Mike Kell quickly became the talk of the United Way golf tournament Monday afternoon at Lake Wissota Golf Course.

On the 11th hole, Kell sunk the ball into the hole in one shot, earning him the keys to a new Subaru Impreza.

“They saw that thing rolling on up there, and they said, ‘It’s in,’” he said of the bystanders.

Kell, who retired from Kell Container 10 years ago, has been golfing for 45 years, and he’s played the United Way tournament almost every year since it began 21 years ago.

On Monday, as he reached the 11th hole, he glanced at the car parked on the tee box.

“They were telling us, ‘Here’s what you win if you get a hole-in-one,’” he recalls.

Before teeing off on the 159-yard par-3 11th, he thought little of the prize. Kell had recorded a hole-in-one once before, at the Eau Claire Country Club, but he only plays at Lake Wissota once a year.

“I really don’t know the course hardly at all,” he said.

When he shot, he knew he had done well, but he didn’t realize how well.

“I stood there saying, boy, it has to get going, but I thought it was short,” Kell said.

His brother Tom, who was in his group, was the first to announce the ball had rolled into the hole, while teammates Charlie Kell (also Mike’s brother), Tom Bowe and Shawn Kapanke looked on.

When all the spectators realized what had happened, a celebration began.

“That was exciting,” Mike Kell said. “The two gals here, they were hooting and hollering.”

Judy Sires and Alice Marshall were handing out raffle tickets in the tee box when Kell scored the ace.

“We couldn’t believe it,” Marshall said.

“We could see the ball going. It was a pretty shot,” Sires said.

Sires and Marshall have been working at the tournament for years and had never seen a hole-in-one. As the celebration began, Sires blew a whistle she had hanging around her neck.

“It’s surely exciting,” she said.

Chuck Frenette with the United Way said as long as he’s been involved in the tournament, no one has ever won the car, which has been a hole-in-one prize since the tournament began. At another hole, a vacation was still waiting to be won.

Chilson Motors sponsored the car, and the United Way had an insurance policy out on it in case it was won.

Kell said coincidentally his wife had travelled to Eau Claire from their Stone Lake home to have her car repaired Monday.

After the initial celebration was over, Kell jumped into the driver’s side of his new car to check out his prize.

“It’s beautiful,” he said. “Nice interior, leather interior, and the color’s very nice.”

With seven holes yet to golf, Kell hadn’t decided whether he was going to follow through with the tradition of buying everyone in the clubhouse a round of drinks. With 200 people in the tournament, a round might add up quickly.

“It’s a little scary,” he laughed.

A GREAT HOLE IN ONE STORY (UNEDITED)

From: Libby Dubay, Del Ray California. This is a hole in one on #6 at the Lakes at El Segundo City.

The only woman in this weekly group, it was especially a delight. This hole may be short but it is surrounded by sand. You need to be on the green or you are in the sand! This was a textbook beauty. Straight shot off the tee, landing @ 10-15 feet in front of flag & slowly rolling up & dropping in like it was planned!

When it first landed one of the guys commented on the nice shot as going to be hard to beat in our "closest to the pin" bet...just before it went in.

One of the guys has had 2 in his life. The other had said that he had never even witnessed one in his 30+ years of golf. The other had never gotten one but had witnessed it only once before. All were thrilled to lose that day to me just to see one of those!

First thing I did was call my 82 year old day - who taught me to play just to share the news. He has had 3 or 4 in his lifetime so hopefully this is just the FIRST for me!
