Feb 18, 2010, Bill Hilbig: Angelo Fichera, 90, is happy with his sixth hole-in-one

Angelo Fichera admits he doesn’t hit the ball as far as he once did. Of course, when you’re 90 years old, you have to adjust to a few changes in your game.

On the other hand, Fichera can still hit the ball fairly straight. That, and a little luck, enabled him to record the sixth hole-in-one in his lifetime Monday at Vista Plantation Golf Club in Vero Beach.

Jan 9, 2010, Kim DiVittorio knocks in her 2nd hole-in-one

By Dick Sparrer Los Gatos Weekly-Times

A Christmas gift came a day late for Kim DiVittorio, and Santa Claus had nothing to do with it.

While Santa was resting following his long winter's night, DiVittorio was out playing a round of golf at the Santa Clara Golf Club on Dec. 26 when she knocked in a hole-in-one on the 100-yard par 3 eighth hole.

It wasn't her first.

DiVittorio had rammed in an ace years ago while playing the 160-yard par 3 fourth hole at the same course, but this one was even more special — her perfect 8-iron shot hit the hole on the fly and stayed in the cup.

Jan 8, 2010, Hole In One King to teach at new Driving Range...

Starting my new year at a new place, and for my Houston area friends, I hope that you will visit me at my little “Tin Cup” type driving range, now called GOLF U at 242. We are located just about two miles east of Interstate 45 on Highway 242 (right on Concord). The new owners, Tam and Tammy Nyguen, are giving me the opportunity to realize every old golf pro’s dream, and vast improvements to the existing facility are now underway. It is our hope to create a most incredible and unique place where you actually have the chance to practice and LEARN this crazy game.

Until next time, and as always………………………….

Jan 4, 2010, THE YEAR IN GOLF/WHAT’S AHEAD FOR 2010

Obviously, this was the year of the TIGER! Pretty sure that most of what happened in 2009 will forever be overshadowed by a Thanksgiving “bad driving day” by the greatest golfer of all time.

That’s a shame, as some incredible moments took place, with my favorite being Tom Watson taking us on a great ride at the British Open. Won’t bother to rehash everything else, as I am ready for 2010 to “ROAR”.

That’s my clue for what I see happening in 2010. Tiger Woods will return to golf, and return in a big way. Don’t know exactly when, but I will be shocked if it’s any later than that special event in April.

I truly believe that he will have a banner year, with AT LEAST one major added and five or six “normal” events. Along with everyone else I know, I expect a tremendous year for Phil Mickelson. Tiger has lost some of his “armor”, and I sense that several players will step forward to join the joust.

My picks for the majors are: MASTERS: Phil Mickelson BRITISH OPEN: Rory McElroy US OPEN: Tiger Woods PGA CHAMPIONSHIP: Sergio Garcia.

I also think we will see Ernie Els visit the winner’s circle again, and on a personal “hope” think that my friend Roland Thatcher will capture his first PGA win.

Jan 2, 2010, A new years golf tip from the King

Common sense tells us that we don’t want to wear a pair of shoes that are either too big, or too small. The discomfort alone makes us take the time to be fitted for the appropriate size. Why then, do I see golfers all over the world with golf clubs that don’t fit them?

The technology has changed so dramatically over the past few years, not only with regard to the equipment itself, but even more so with ever improving ways to appropriately fit you to the perfect set of clubs.

It used to be that we only checked for shaft flex and maybe the length. The choices were limited, so it was pretty much one size fits all.

This has all changed, as now we are able to find the exact shaft (flex, material, and kick point), loft (for launch angle), length, and weight that is most compatible to your golf swing. Virtually every recognized golf facility or retail establishment is featuring a club fitting specialist, and believe me, they are worth every penny you spend with them. Most facilities waive the fee when you purchase the equipment.

I guess the bottom line is that is not really a tip, but a strong suggestion that you take the time to visit one of your local club fitters, and make sure that “if the shoe fits….wear it”.

Happy New Year

St. Andrew's Invitational golf tournament, held at Brookside Golf and Country Club in June, promised a fabulous prize: a brand-new, fully loaded Ford Flex crossover wagon to any golfer who sank a hole-in-one on the 17th hole.

Sensationally, Stockton golfer A.J. Hohn did just that - he actually aced the 17th hole.

But Hohn got no car.

Oct 25, 2009, Thompson cards double-eagle, hole-in-one

by Tim Tyers - Oct. 24, 2009 04:34 PM

How does a wise golfer rid himself of a balky putter without sending it to a watery grave?

Nicholas Thompson provided the perfect answer during Saturday's third round of the Frys.com Open at Grayhawk Golf Club. He kept the wayward stick in his bag.

In a span of three holes of the Raptor Course's backside, the product of Georgia Tech shaved five strokes from par, first by scoring a double-eagle on the 575-yard par 5 No. 11.

Then, after just missing birdie on No. 12, he came back with a hole-in-one on the par 3, 13th hole, which was playing 30 yards shorter than the previous two days.

By Bill Hilbig Posted October 15, 2009 at 1:36 a.m.

But they’re still able to help him with his swing.

“I can still swing a club pretty good,” Kilcullen said. “My swing has always been there.”

Kilcullen’s swing was working just fine earlier this month at Vista Plantation Golf club in Vero Beach. For the sixth time in his life, Kilcullen shot a hole-in-one. This time the ace came on the 98-yard No. 6 hole on Oct. 2.

Sep 29, 2009, Two holes in one - Same Round

FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- A golfer in North Dakota achieved the nearly unthinkable -- sinking two holes-in-one in the same round.

Troy Radermacher of Ellendale, N.D., used a pitching wedge Sunday to ace the 116-yard 15th hole at Oxbow Country Club. The ball found the cup again on the 135-yard fifth hole.

The Forum newspaper says Radermacher was golfing with family and friends. He says he has had a hard time believing what he did.

Golf Digest calculates the odds of two holes-in-one in the same round at 67 million to one.

But he's got company. Ruth Day, a 64-year-old retiree from northern England, shot two holes-in-one in the same round on Sept. 9. The next day, former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Steve Blass did the same in a span of 11 holes in Pennsylvania.

Sep 24, 2009, One hole-in-one follows another at Blue Bell

By Joe Juliano - Inquirer Staff Writer

After seeing one of his playing partners make a hole in one, the first ace he had ever seen in person, Tom Downey just wanted to get his ball on the green on the par-3 sixth hole at Blue Bell Country Club.

"I hadn't played in six weeks and I was playing lousy," Downey recalled. "All I wanted to do was put a good swing on the ball."

Not only did he do that, but Downey also achieved the unthinkable - a hole in one - after Chris Ebersole accomplished the same thing.

Sep 24, 2009, 19 year old gets 1st Hole In One - In his own words

I was on the ninth tee box at El Dorado CC in Long Beach CA, practicing for the Long Beach Open.

I was playing the tips, had 235 yards to the pin, into the wind, with a knock down 3 wood in mind.

I was waiting on the tee box with my playing partners and my grandfather (my caddie), when were talking about different clubs and I was telling them how my R9 3 wood was "the best club I have ever hit."

I proceed to step up to my ball, hit the absolute most perfect shot of my life, 2 bounces, and it was in.

I knew right off the club face that it was going in. The ball was right at the pin the entire time.

I am 19 years old, a +1 handicap, and have been playing golf for 6 years now. I have had plenty of tap in birdies, lip outs, hitting the stick, you name it; yet I had never had a hole in one.

It was one of the more special moments of my golf career and will stick out in my mind forever.

Sep 22, 2009, LPGA Problems

Na Yeon Choi....does anybody really know that she won the 2009 Samsung yesterday?

This is the equivalent of next week's PGA Tour Championship, and I have not spoken to one person today that even knew it was going on. It is a sad day for womens' golf, and I am a big supporter of what should be happening for this most important part of the game. The LPGA needs to find a commissioner and do it NOW! The ladies that play professional golf at this level are truly more of an inspiration to the average golfer than the Tiger Woods, Yang's, Stickers, and such that we follow each week on the PGA Tour. WE CAN RELATE TO THEM.

I know that I dont' hit it 302 yards on average off of the tee, but can relate to the 245-250 yards average on the LPGA. I know the marketplace is affected by the economy, but the LPGA is an important resourse to the growth of the game. It is imperative that the LPGA find a commissioner capable of communicating the capability of the ladies games to the golf masses. This will bring a more important understanding and ultimately a larger following of both male and female golfers to the LPGA events and telecasts.

This would provide the win-win scenario necessary for the sponsors to continue to support this great ingredient to the game. Know it will never happen, but my pick is for "Leave the mike off" Dottie Pepper.
